PART 4: The brother who walked away from the club

Rex stood up slowly, still holding the kitten against his chest like it was something fragile.
His voice was quiet when he spoke, but every biker in the yard heard him.
“Marcus left the life eight years ago. Said he wanted something clean for his kid. I tried to find him after he disappeared… but he didn’t want to be found.”
He looked down at Tommy again. The boy was hugging himself now, small shoulders shaking.
Tommy’s voice was barely above a whisper.
“Dad got really sick last month. He couldn’t work. He couldn’t even stand up some days. He told me if he ever didn’t wake up… I had to come here with the kitten and the tag. He said Uncle Rex would know what to do.”
Rex felt something crack inside his chest.
He hadn’t heard anyone call him “Uncle Rex” in a very long time.
One of the older bikers stepped forward, voice low.
“Boss… there’s only one hospital that takes people without money around here. The one on 5th. Maybe he’s there.”
Rex nodded once, sharp.
He looked at the boy.
“What’s your name?”
“Tommy,” the kid answered. “Tommy Hale.”
Rex closed his eyes for half a second. When he opened them, his voice was steady again.
“Get the van ready. We’re going to the hospital. All of us.”
No one argued. Boots started moving. Engines rumbled to life.

Rex looked down at the tiny kitten still tucked against his leather vest.
“You’re coming too,” he muttered.
