PART 3: The name that should have stayed buried

Elena’s fingers trembled as she pulled the document out.
The old photograph slipped first — her father, smiling, standing beside a much younger Matthew in front of the Vargas building. Both men looked proud. Both looked like they trusted each other completely.
Then she saw the last page.
Her breath caught.
There, at the bottom, where Isabel’s signature should have been, was a single clean line:
Matthew Hale – Trustee and Guardian of Elena Vargas
Elena looked up at him, eyes wide.
“You…” Her voice cracked. “You were supposed to protect everything. Not… not work with her.”
Matthew’s jaw tightened. He didn’t try to take the papers back.
“Your father didn’t trust Isabel. Not even on the day he died. He made me promise that if anything happened to him, I would keep you safe and keep the company out of her hands. That envelope was supposed to reach you two years ago.”
The SUV behind them flashed its lights again — closer this time.
The driver muttered, “They’re not backing off, sir.”
Matthew ignored him. His eyes stayed on Elena.
“Isabel found out I had this. She’s been calling me all week because she knows the truth is about to come out. That’s why she wants you gone.”
Elena’s hand tightened around the envelope.
“My father left everything… to you?”
“No,” Matthew said quietly. “He left everything to you. I was only supposed to hold it until you were ready. Until it was safe.”
A loud thud shook the back of their car.
The SUV had bumped them.
May you like
Matthew finally turned to the driver.
“Take the old dock road. Lose them.”
