PART 4: The truth that had been buried with the wreckage

Security tried to escort the fiancée out, but Ethan raised a hand. The entire room was watching.

Elena knelt down so she was eye level with her son. She wiped his tears with her thumb.

“Baby, can you go with Uncle Marcus for a minute?” she asked softly, nodding toward Ethan’s trusted head of security.

The boy hesitated, then nodded and let Marcus lead him away.

Only then did Elena stand and face her husband.

“The crash wasn’t an accident,” she said, loud enough for the closest guests to hear. “Someone cut the brake line. I survived because I was thrown from the car before it went over the railing. When I woke up in the hospital… I heard her on the phone.”

She pointed at the fiancée without looking at her.

“She told someone the job was done. That I was gone. That now Ethan would finally marry her and the company would be secure.”

Ethan felt the floor tilt under him.

He turned to the woman he had been about to marry.

She didn’t deny it.

Her face had gone from white to something harder. Colder.

“You were never supposed to come back,” she hissed at Elena. “You were supposed to stay dead.”

Ethan’s hands clenched into fists.

Two years of grief. Two years of believing he had lost the love of his life. Two years of raising their son alone while this woman smiled at him every morning.

All of it… a lie.

He looked at Elena — the woman who had been cleaning his house in disguise just to stay close to their son.

“Why didn’t you come to me?” he asked, voice cracking.

Elena’s eyes softened for the first time.

“Because I didn’t know who I could trust. And I needed to protect our son. If she found out I was alive… she would’ve tried again.”
