PART 2: The photograph that refused to lie

The father — Ethan — couldn’t move.
He stared at the old photograph in his hands. The woman smiling weakly in the hospital bed was unmistakably the same girl he had loved nine years ago. The same eyes. The same small smile. And right beside her, wrapped in a blue blanket, was a newborn baby.
His blue suit jacket was hanging on the back of the chair in the photo.
He had been there.
He just never knew why.
Ethan slowly lowered himself onto the edge of the fountain so he was eye level with the boy.
“What’s your name?” he asked again, voice rough.
The boy looked down at his dirty sneakers.
“Noah,” he said quietly. “Noah Bennett.”
Ethan felt the name hit him like a wave.
Bennett was her last name.
Lily stepped closer, curious and gentle.
“Noah… do you want to sit with us? We have extra sandwiches in Dad’s bag.”
Noah hesitated, then nodded once.
The three of them moved to a quieter bench under a tree. Ethan kept glancing at the boy’s face, at the tiny birthmark near his cheek — the exact same one Ethan had when he was little.
He unfolded the photograph again with shaking hands.
“Noah… can you tell me about your mom?”
Noah’s voice was small but steady.
“Her name was Sophie. She got sick last year. Really sick. Before she went to the hospital for the last time, she gave me this photo and said… if I ever saw a man wearing a blue suit near the big fountain in the plaza, I should ask him if he’s my dad.”
Ethan closed his eyes.
Sophie.

He hadn’t seen her in almost ten years. They had broken up badly. He had been young, focused on his career, and she had disappeared without a word. He had tried to find her once, but she had changed her number and moved away.
He never knew she was pregnant.
