PART 3: The mother who carried the secret alone

Ethan bought hot chocolate for all three of them from a nearby cart.
They sat together on the bench. Lily kept looking between her father and the new boy with wide, interested eyes.
Noah sipped his drink slowly, as if he was afraid it might disappear.
Ethan spoke carefully.
“Noah… did your mom ever tell you why she left?”
Noah nodded.
“She said you were very busy with important work. She said you might not have time for a baby. She didn’t want to make trouble for you. So she raised me by herself.”
Ethan felt something crack inside his chest.
He had been building his company back then. Working eighteen-hour days. He remembered the last fight with Sophie — he had said he wasn’t ready for serious commitment. She had looked at him with sad eyes and walked away.
He never heard from her again.
And all this time… she had been raising his son alone.
Ethan looked at Noah’s worn hoodie and dirty shoes. His heart ached.
“Noah… I didn’t know. I swear to you, I didn’t know you existed.”
Noah looked up at him with serious eyes that were far too old for his age.
“Mom said you were a good man. She just didn’t think you wanted us.”
Lily suddenly reached over and took Noah’s hand without asking.
“You can share my dad,” she said simply. “He has two hands.”
Ethan almost smiled through the pain.
He looked at his daughter, then at the boy who carried his nose, his birthmark, and his blood.
“Noah,” he said quietly, “would you like to come home with us today? Just for a little while. So we can talk more. And maybe… figure things out together.”
Noah looked at Lily, then back at Ethan.
May you like
He nodded once.
“Okay.”
