PART 4: The truth that had been waiting nine years
Emma sat in the small room, swinging her legs nervously.
A kind woman from child services had come to sit with her. She asked gentle questions.
“How did you find this courtroom today?”
Emma looked down at her hands.
“My mommy left me with a lady named Miss Clara when I was a baby. She said if anything ever happened to her, I should wait until I was old enough, then find the courthouse and play the tape. She gave me the address and everything.”
The woman’s voice was soft.
“How old are you now, Emma?”
“Nine.”
The woman nodded slowly.
“And you’ve been living with Miss Clara all this time?”
Emma shook her head.
“Miss Clara got sick last year. She had to go to a hospital. I’ve been staying with different people… but I remembered what Mommy said. So I came here by myself.”
She looked up with tired but determined eyes.
“I just want everyone to know the truth. My mommy wasn’t crazy. And my daddy didn’t deserve to die.”
Outside the room, the prosecution was already moving fast.
