PART 3: The name that broke the sunlight

The park went still.
Emily stood frozen in the spilled milk and rolling apples, staring at the man like he was a ghost.
Daniel.
Her ex-husband.
The man she had run from five years ago.
Lena looked between them, small hands still clutching her red bucket.
“Mommy… who is he?”
Emily’s voice came out broken.
“Lena, baby… go wait by the bench. Please.”
The little girl didn’t move.
Daniel took one slow step forward. His expensive shoes stopped at the edge of the spilled milk.
“You told her I was dead,” he said quietly. Not angry. Just… hollow.
Emily shook her head, tears already forming.
“I told her you were gone. That was the truth I could live with.”
Daniel looked down at Lena again. Really looked. The same eyes. The same small stubborn chin.
“She’s mine,” he whispered.
It wasn’t a question.
Emily’s shoulders started to shake.
“I was pregnant when I left. You were working eighteen-hour days. You said we couldn’t afford a child yet. I thought… I thought you wouldn’t want her.”
Daniel closed his eyes like the words physically hit him.
“I searched for you for two years,” he said. “I hired people. I checked hospitals. I thought you died in that car crash outside the city.”
Emily’s face crumpled.
“I made it look like I died. I had to. I was scared you would take her from me.”
Lena finally spoke, her small voice cutting through everything.

“Mommy… is he my daddy?”
The question hung in the air like glass about to break.
