PART 4: The bench that held five years of silence

They sat on a wooden bench at the edge of the park.

Lena sat between them, swinging her legs, still holding her red bucket like a shield.

Daniel kept glancing at her when he thought she wasn’t looking. Every time he did, something in his face cracked a little more.

Emily spoke first, voice low so only he could hear.

“I didn’t plan to disappear forever. I just needed time. Then time became years. And I was too scared to come back.”

Daniel’s hands were clasped so tightly his knuckles were white.

“I missed everything,” he said. “Her first steps. Her first words. Her birthday. All of it.”

He looked at Lena again.

“What’s her full name?”

Emily hesitated.

“Lena Rose Hale.”

Daniel let out a shaky breath. Rose was his mother’s name.

He reached into his wallet and pulled out the photograph the little girl had seen earlier. It was old — Emily on their wedding day, smiling in a simple white dress.

“I kept this in my wallet every single day,” he said. “Even when I thought you were gone.”

Lena leaned forward curiously.

“Can I see?”

Daniel handed it to her gently.

The little girl studied the photo, then looked up at him with wide eyes.

“You look different now.”

Daniel gave a small, sad smile.

“So do you. You were still in your mommy’s belly the last time I saw you.”

Lena thought about that for a moment.

Then she asked the question that made both adults go quiet.

“Are you going to take me away from Mommy?”

May you like

Daniel looked at Emily. Really looked at her for the first time in five years.

“No,” he said softly. “But I would like to know you. If that’s okay with both of you.”
