Justice

The trial was swift.

Victoria pleaded guilty to all charges — child endangerment, false imprisonment, multiple counts of fraud, and conspiracy in the death of Elena Vance. Several of her former victims came forward to testify. The evidence was overwhelming.

On the day of sentencing, she stood before the judge in a simple gray dress, hands cuffed in front of her. She looked smaller than Arthur remembered. Older. The polished socialite was gone. In her place stood a woman who had finally run out of masks.

The judge sentenced her to seven years in federal prison, with the possibility of early release after four years if she continued to cooperate with authorities investigating the larger criminal network she had been part of.

Before she was led away, Victoria turned and looked directly at Arthur and Julian, who sat in the back row. She did not speak. She simply bowed her head — slow, deep, and full of something that looked almost like peace.

Arthur did not nod back. But Julian, now eight years old, squeezed his father’s hand and whispered, “She looks really sad, Daddy.”

Arthur looked down at his son. “Some people have to live with the consequences of their choices, Julian. That’s what justice means.”
